Pioneer Press - Evanston Social Security Bash Has an Agenda

News Article

Schakowsky's opponent in the Nov. 2 election, Joel Pollak, says reforms are necessary if the Social Security is to survive.

"The program will start running annual deficits over the next two years, eight years earlier than originally predicted," said Pollak, 32, the Republican candidate for the 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. "We need reforms that will protect the benefits enjoyed by those who have paid into the system their whole lives, while ensuring the survival of the program in the future."

Pollak said younger workers should be allowed to invest a portion of their Social Security taxes into retirement accounts overseen by the government.

"Through that reform and others like it, we can save Social Security. Ms. Schakowsky's do-nothing option," he added, "is not an option."
